The Bombay Community Public Trust (BCPT) was established in July 1991 by a group of concerned citizens including the Late HT Parekh and RM Lala. Our Founding Trustees realised that while there were several private charities, many with religious and sectarian objectives, several with medical and educational purposes, there was no organisation until then which had a larger developmental vision. A funding organisation with clear and specific objectives that involved the entire citizenry of Mumbai and worked for all groups, areas and purposes, was necessary.
BCPT was set up as a People’s Foundation – a Community Trust – to address the various social, human resource development, educational, health and environmental problems affecting the citizens of Mumbai.
BCPT has been created with the belief that there exists among the citizens of Mumbai an interest in the well being of the city and its people, and a willingness to come together and share valuable resources, gain mutual benefit and achieve a public good. It builds on the confidence that individuals and institutions have received substantially and in diverse ways from the city, and want to fulfill their social responsibility towards it. With this belief we follow partnership approach: a partnership between individual donors and companies to NGOs and causes working on the field in Mumbai. It is an endeavour to link people who have the resources with projects for the welfare of its citizens.
Our Vision is To bring about a just and inclusive society, where every person is a member of a community and the community takes care of all.
Our Objectives are to
Ultimately, acting as intermediaries and facilitators, we help to improve the quality of life for the citizens of Mumbai.
Our Trust works in partnership with NGOs for social development. We support projects in many fields – education of children and youth, care of senior citizens, women’s empowerment and the girl child, health and nutrition, community development, in and around the city in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. These projects range from awareness raising to intervention, from needs assessment to evaluation, from development of training manuals to creation of films and other audio-visual tools. Our concern is to ensure that whatever projects are supported achieve what they set out to do.
In addition to funding projects, the Trust engages in some activities directly. These include a number of educational scholarships, medical relief, development of some training manuals and films, conducting NGO development activities by organising training programmes for NGO personnel, providing basic infrastructural assistance to start ups, arranging meetings for sharing and networking. Occasionally, we have also managed a project ourselves.
Our logo represents a human being, every man, woman and child of Mumbai, who together make up the city. Every human being is a source of positive energies that are powerful for creating change. The symbol respresents this energy, which when interlinked with energies of other human beings results in a vibrant and potent force for the benefit of the community. The logo signifies the principle of inclusiveness and aggregation; every person is a member of the community and the community takes care of all. Together, the two signify BCPT’s mission of bringing about synergy between the resources of the individual and the community, between the donor and the doer, between the NGOs and administration, and between the activists and the activities, to make Mumbai a better place.
